Interfax reports Ministry Verifies Reports Of Russian Convicted In Iraq

RUSSIA-CITIZEN-MINISTRY-IRAQ Ministry verifying reports of Russian convictedin IraqMOSCOW. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Russia's Foreign Ministry is investigating thereports claiming that a Russian citizen has been sentenced on charges ofterrorism in Iraq, the ministry's press and information department toldInterfax on Tuesday.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry keeps in close contact with the Iraqileadership to clarify the situation: whether it is a Russian citizen and whathe has been sentenced for," the department's Deputy Director Mikhail Troyanskysaid.

Mass media reported earlier that Iraq's Central Criminal Court convicted 54foreigners, among them a Russian citizen, on charges of terrorism.However, "at the moment, the situation is unclear," Troyansky said.
